DUKE POWER'S NUCLEAR STATIONS POST RECORD YEAR
 CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co.'s

(NYSE: DUK) three nuclear stations produced more power and operated at a higher capacity factor in 1991 than any other year, company officials said today.
"The fine performance of these stations is helping keep the cost of electricity as low as possible to our customers," said Hal B. Tucker, senior vice president-nuclear.
The company's three stations -- Oconee in Seneca, S.C.; McGuire in Cornelius, N.C., and Catawba in Clover, S.C. -- combined to produce more than 49.3 billion kilowatt-hours in 1991, said Tucker.
A billion kilowatt-hours is enough electricity to operate about 80,000 homes for a year, Tucker added.
"Our 1991 mark was about 3 percent better than our previous best mark set in 1988," said Tucker. "In addition, our stations operated at a capacity factor of 79.8 percent -- slightly better than a 77.4 percent mark of 1988."
The capacity factor compares the amount of electricity generated to what could have been generated if the plants had run at 100 percent all year. Tucker said that the most recent industry average for such capacity is about 70 percent.
The three units at Oconee Nuclear Station generated 19 billion kilowatt-hours. The two units at McGuire Nuclear Station and the two units at Catawba Nuclear Station generated 16 billion and 14 billion kilowatt-hours, respectively. Combined, the stations produced 63 percent of the electricity used by the company's customers.
Duke Power is the nation's seventh-largest investor-owned electric utility, serving 1.6 million customers in the Piedmont and western portions of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Duke Power is the sole owner of the Oconee and McGuire stations. It operates the Catawba station, but jointly owns it with N.C. Electric Membership Corporation, N.C. Municipal Power Agency Number 1, Piedmont Municipal Power Agency and Saluda River Electric Cooperative.
