DUKE POWER'S BAD CREEK STATION WINS ENGINEERING AWARD

DUKE POWER'S BAD CREEK STATION WINS ENGINEERING AWARD
 CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co.'s

(NYSE: DUK) Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station has received the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award of Merit from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
The award recognizes engineering projects that demonstrate outstanding engineering skills and represent the greatest contribution to civil engineering progress.
"We're proud that our team's efforts have been recognized," said Duke Power's Carey York, who served as the project's manager during construction. "This was a $1 billion, 10-year project that was brought in a full year earlier than scheduled."
The 1,068-megawatt pumped-storage facility began operating in 1991 and helps provide electricity for Duke Power's 1.6 million customers.
Located in Oconee County, S.C., the station produces electricity by moving water from a constructed 360-acre reservoir through turbines in an underground powerhouse -- discharging into Lake Jocassee. During low power demand periods, it pumps water up to refill the storage reservoir.
The Bad Creek Station was one of three projects honored with Awards of Merit. The world's first hydraulically operated, double- leaf concrete swing bridge, built by the city of Seattle, Wash., received the 100,000-member society's top award.
