DUDS 'N SUDS LAUNDRY FRANCHISE HOLDS THE SECRET TO SUCCESSFUL
FRANCHISING IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD
DES MOINES, Iowa, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- So what's the secret behind the nation's fastest growing laundry franchisor you ask? Good Clean Fun(R), and hard work, says Phil Akin, founder and CEO of Clean Duds Inc. (CDI), the Iowa-based franchisor of Duds 'n Suds laundromats. And the hard work has obviously paid off. CDI recently reported record franchise sales of more than $1.5 million, a 240 percent increase over sales in 1990.
Akin's operation presently boasts 70 laundries in 23 states, including new franchises in Canada and Northern Ireland. Though many franchises still offer beer, the emphasis now is on service, cleanliness and a family orientation. Duds 'n Suds is not only America's largest laundry franchise, it's the only international franchise of its kind. And when Akin looks abroad, he sees his company's future.
"The Canadian and Irish markets are tremendous," Akin says. "These countries have never experienced the convenience of Duds 'n Suds laundries. We're convinced that international expansion offers great opportunities for the company."
Akin says he is currently negotiating with Japanese investors, and Duds 'n Suds laundries could be a part of that country's landscape by the end of the year. "There are 16,000 coin-operated laundries in Japan, but none compares with a Duds 'n Suds," he said. "We think Japan offers extraordinary business opportunities for us." In addition, Akin is actively pursuing new markets in Mexico and Brazil.
On the domestic front, CDI is developing a system of five marketing "hubs" across the United States. These offices will act as regional franchise sales headquarters and offer increased support for area franchisees. Combined with his international efforts, Akin believes the company can have 1,000 Duds 'n Suds franchise stores in operation by the end of the decade.
It's an ambitious goal, to be sure. But Akin, who is only 30 years old, has the confidence and drive of youth tempered by cold, hard experience.
