DUAL AIR BAGS ON MOST '94 FORD CARS

DEARBORN, Mich., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) will more than double its sales in the 1994 model year -- of air bags, that is.
Dual driver- and passenger-side air bags will be standard equipment on 13 of the company's 17 car lines this fall -- including the best- selling Ford Taurus, whose sales last year topped 400,000 units.
Since becoming the first domestic manufacturer to offer modern air bags in 1985, Ford has sold 4 million cars and trucks equipped with the supplemental safety devices. Of these, 850,000 also have featured passenger-side air bags, far more than any other manufacturer.
Five Ford car lines -- including three Lincolns and two Mercurys -- already offer dual air bags as standard equipment. A passenger-side air bag is optional on Ford Taurus and Crown Victoria.
Attesting to the growing demand for passenger- as well as driver- side air bags is the success of the feature as an option on Taurus: In the 1992 model year, the first year a passenger-side air bag was available on the car, 17 percent of buyers were takers -- a number that has jumped to 50 percent so far in '93.
"The customer has told us clearly that the passenger-side air bag in a family sedan is important, so we decided to make it standard," said Ross Roberts, Ford vice president and general manager of Ford Division.
Dual air bags will be standard on all '94 car lines except Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer, which will be equipped with standard driver- side air bags, and Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz, on which a driver-side system will remain an option.
Ford Also is Truck Air-bag Leader
Ford also will sell more trucks equipped with standard driver-side air bags than any other manufacturer in the 1994 model year.
The light duty F-Series pick-up, North America's best-selling vehicle for 11 years running, will be the first full-sized pick-up in the nation to offer a standard driver-side air bag when it goes on sale in September as a 1994 model. Ford Bronco also will be the first in its class to be equipped with a driver-side air bag. And Mercury Villager minivan will make its air-bag debut in November.
Ford's Aerostar minivan and the full-sized Econoline van (under 8,500 pounds, GVW) and Club Wagon already feature standard driver-side air bags.
"These latest moves constitute one more step in Ford's plan to remain the country's air-bag leader by making dual air bags standard on all of our cars and light trucks by the mid-'90s, well in advance of federal requirements," added Bob Munson, executive director of Ford's Automotive Safety and Engineering Standards Office.
The federal government's phase-in schedule requires that all cars be equipped with dual air bags by the 1998 model year, and all trucks, by '99.
