DU PONT TO RELEASE DOCUMENTS SUPPORTING ANNOUNCEMENT THAT BENLATE DID NOT CAUSE FLORIDA PLANT DAMAGE

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- Du Pont (NYSE: DD) announced today that it has reached an agreement with the state of Florida to release to Agriculture Commissioner Bob Crawford documents that support the company's Nov. 5 announcement that Benlate did not cause plant damage.
The documents comprise Du Pont's 1991 and 1992 scientific data and conclusions. The company has previously made available in Tallahassee, Fla., all data submitted that support registration of Benlate with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
"Our '92 research unequivocally supports our conclusion that Benlate DF was not responsible for the crop damages experienced in Florida during 1990 and 1991," said William F. Kirk, vice president for Agricultural Products. "Du Pont remains certain that Commissioner Crawford will be enlightened if he takes this opportunity we have offered to share and review the science."
Kirk added that Du Pont also agreed to release to the state the so- called "Duffy memo" because much of it had already been leaked to the media in direct violation of a court order. But, he noted, this specific release did not waive Du Pont's right to protect its confidential or proprietary documents.
"Commissioner Crawford will see for himself that Dr. Duffy's notations were offered to his colleagues as speculation, not science, and the memo is part of a process, not part of any evidence," Kirk said. "This document is irrelevant to the conclusions about Benlate. Those conclusions are based on the results of our solid, peer-reviewed research, which Du Pont has offered to the state and now offers again."
He said the state of Florida now needs a major effort to understand and to help growers understand the causes of their problems.
"We believe a thorough review of Du Pont's data by the Commissioner and his staff should go a long way toward this goal," Kirk said.
