DU PONT TO CONSOLIDATE NORTH AMERICAN FINISHES PRODUCTION
TROY, Mich., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont today ann?ced plans to consolidate its North American finishes production capabilities from seven to five plants over a three-year period.
The consolidation to reduce costs and improve business competitiveness would involve adding capacity for new products at Du Pont's Mount Clemens, Mich., plant and phasing out production at the Flint, Mich., and Toledo, Ohio, plants by late 1994.
The consolidation will affect about 500 employees at the Flint and Toledo sites. Du Pont hopes to minimize the need for any layoffs through employee redeployment and separation programs under discussion at the affected sites, said Louis F. Savelli, vice president of Du Pont Automotive Products.
Savelli said the decision to consolidate was prompted by an evaluation of excess industry-wide capacity of automotive finishes in North America and the need to optimize the configuration of Du Pont finishes plants to meet anticipated customer demand. The consolidation plan includes improvements in quality and productivity at all Du Pont finishes sites.
"The gradual phasedown of production at Flint and Toledo, scheduled to begin in 1992 and be complete by late 1994, will enable us to manage the transition smoothly both for our employees and customers," said Savelli.
The estimated cost for the consolidation will be charged against 1991 earnings and was reflected in Du Pont's previously announced charges for restructuring.
Du Pont also operates finishes manufacturing facilities at Ajax, Ontario; Front Royal, Va.; Fort Madison, Iowa; and Mexico City.
Du Pont Automotive Products offers more than 100 product lines to the automotive industry, including finishes, plastics, elastomers, electronics, man-made fibers, advanced composites and specialty chemicals. The company's worldwide automotive industry sales were approximately $3 billion in 1991.
