DU PONT TO AWARD $40,000 IN GRANTS TO
CHILD-CARE PROGRAM IN CHESTER AND DELAWARE COUNTIES
SPRINGFIELD, Pa., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont (NYSE: DD) will award $40,000 in grants to child-care providers and school-age child-care (SACC) programs in Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania under the company's $145,000 Flying Colors 1992 program, it was announced today.
The grants are used by providers to upgrade the quality of care through attaining professional accreditation. The monies pay for educational materials, facility improvements and fees associated with accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association of Family Day Care, which set the highest standards of quality and professional status for providers.
Home-based family day care providers receive $1,000 and centers receive $2,000.
"We've added southeast Pennsylvania to our list of Flying Colors communities this year because it is home to a large number of Du Pont employees. We want to assure them that the communities where they live have the appropriate resources to meet their family needs, said Faith Wohl, director, Du Pont work force partnering, during the company's announcement here today to child-care advocates.
Applications will be mailed today to all child-care centers, home- based family child-care providers and licensed SACC programs. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
Family child-care providers must be licensed or registered with the state and have operated their facility for more than 18 months. Child-care centers must be licensed and have operated their center for more than a year. Providers must submit documentation at the time of application and have a self-assessment validated by two outside individuals. Criteria such as health, safety, and the quality of interaction with children will determine accreditation.
Since the program's start in 1990, Du Pont has allocated $370,000 to 118 providers near Du Pont sites throughout the state of Delaware and in Richmond, Va.; Ponca City, Okla.; Troy, Mich.; Houston and Beaumont, Texas. To date, 52 providers have been accredited. This year, licensed providers near Du Pont sites in Delaware (SACC programs only) and western North Carolina will also receive grants.
The Flying Colors program was designed by Du Pont to address its employees' needs for high-quality child care in their communities, and to recognize the professionalism of child-care providers.
In July 1990, the company also introduced a national child-care and elder-care resource-and-referral service for all U.S. employees to help them find appropriate dependent-care programs, which now includes consultation and referrals on adoption, school performance and adults with disabilities.
