 New family of products combines local and X.25/frame relay
 bridging with multiprotocol routing through the use of
 innovative 'Logical Bridge Routing' technology
 RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont Electronics, Electro-Optic Products Group (EOP) is expanding the internetworking capabilities of its flagship product line, the PARAGON(TM) Intelligent Networking System. The new bridge/router products, featuring Clearpoint Research Corporation's advanced "Logical Bridge Routing" technology, represent the second phase of the relationship established between Du Pont and Clearpoint earlier this year.
 The new PARAGON internetworking products operate on a high performance, RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing)-based platform. The addition of Logical Bridge Routing enhances traditional bridging functionality, and allows organizations to build internetworks using the advantages of both bridging and routing without the disadvantages of either.
 Logical Bridge Routing Optimizes Network Performance
 Logical Bridge Routing creates a layered networking solution consisting of industry-leading high performance bridges and a multiprotocol router within a single device. The technology centers around the simple principle of individual logical bridges subnetted with a core routing technology -- all of which are co-located on a single PARAGON Bridge/Router Module, the LBR-0501.
 Using Logical Bridge Routing, a network can be designed with up to four high performance logical bridges. An organization can choose on a per port basis to bridge all protocols within the logical bridges, and route between them. Multiprotocol routing builds a "firewall" between the logical bridges, as well as improves internetwork connectivity by routing only when absolutely necessary, and bridging at wire speed in all other instances.
 Enhanced LAN/WAN Connectivity
 Du Pont's new LBR-0501 will initially be available in two configurations. When configured with Bridge/Router Software BRS-0023, the LBR operates as a high speed, multiport bridge that simultaneously interconnects the PARAGON concentrator's two Ethernet backplane channels, two external LAN segments, and one WAN port. The WAN port boasts speeds up to 256 Kb/s, and supports the popular multipoint, connectionless, virtual-circuit standards of X.25 and Frame Relay. Existing circuit switched technologies such as DDS and fractional T1 are also supported.
 When configured with Bridge/Router Software BRS-0031, the LBR module becomes a multiport, multiprotocol router with high speed (59,080 pps filtering/29,540 pps forwarding) local bridging capabilities. Initial Logical Bridge Routing support on the PARAGON LBR is for Internet Protocol (IP), XNS, and Novell IPX routing protocols. Other IP routing protocols supported are Routing Internet Protocol (RIP), Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP), HELLO, dynamic routing, and static routing.
 Easy to Manage and Customize to User Requirements
 The LBR-0501 module is fully compliant with SNMP MIB2 (RFC 1157); when using BRS-0031 software, it also complies with the draft SNMP security standards. The security features of the LBR Bridge/Router are enhanced through user-customizable address and protocol filtering, which allows the network manager to permit or deny access of individual or groups of devices to specific ports.
 The LBR module may be managed via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management stations such as Du Pont's COMMAND-TRAC(TM), Hewlett- Packard's OpenView(TM) Network Node Manager, or through a Telnet connection. Clearpoint Research Corporation's menu-driven StarWatch(TM) management software is shipped with each LBR at no charge.
 In addition to the internetworking connectivity provided by the PARAGON Logical Bridge/Router modules, the PARAGON Premises Hub supports two Ethernet and two Token Ring channels, and features a second field- installable backplane for the addition of future networking technologies such as Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), as well as connection oriented services such as frame relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS). All PARAGON modules feature per port switching capabilities, thus enhancing remote control and reconfiguration of both Ethernet and Token Ring networks. Currently available modules include 10BaseT, FOIRL/10BaseFL, and AUI connectivity for Ethernet; unshielded twisted pair, shielded twisted pair, and IEEE 802.5J fiber optic connectivity for Token Ring; and a RISC-based Multiport Bridge Module.
 Du Pont Electro-Optic Products' new PARAGON Logical Bridge/Router Module, LBR-0501, configured with BRS-0023 software is priced at $7495. When configured with BRS-0031 software, the module is priced at $8495. An upgrade from BRS-0023 to BRS-0031 software is available for $1500.
