DU PONT AND CLEARPOINT JOIN FORCES
TO BRING NEW PRODUCTS TO THE LAN/WAN MARKET
Initial project - multiport in-concentrator bridge
for Du Pont's PARAGON(A) Intelligent Networking System
WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Du Pont Electronics, Electro-Optic Products (EOP), headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C., will introduce an Ethernet multiport in-concentrator bridge module for their PARAGON(A) Intelligent Networking System at ComNet 92. The multiport bridge module, Model EMB-0401, is the result of a join development effort by Du Pont EOP and Clearpoint Research Corporation of Hopkinton, Mass.
Unique to the LAN market, the EMB-0401 is the first Ethernet in-concentrator bridge with multiport capabilities. It simultaneously interconnects the PARAGON concentrator's two Ethernet backplane channels, one WAN and two external Ethernet segments with a data transfer rate of 20 Mb/s. The EMB-0401 is a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing)-based multiport Ethernet bridge that is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree Protocol. This RISC design makes the bridge an industry leader in filtering/forwarding rates: 59,080 filtering / 29,540 forwarding packets per second. The built-in WAN port accommodates transmission speeds from 9.6 to 256 Kb/s.
The EMB-0401 is also compliant with SNMP MIB2 (RFC 1157) specifications, and may be monitored as an independent agent via an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) management station. User-customizable address and protocol filtering will allow the network manager to permit or deny access of individual or groups of devices, thereby heightening inter-channel security and LAN performance.
This bridge is the first introduction Du Pont and Clearpoint plan to make over the next year. Future announcements will focus on developments with fiber optic and FDDI products. Glenn Constable, Du Pont's product manager for the PARAGON system, commented on the new relationship: "We were seeking to establish a relationship with another vendor that could offer us expertise in developming a bridge for our new intelligent hub. Clearpoint, with their experience in advanced internetworking, was clearly a strong candidate. Once we started talking, we both realized the strength in furthering this relationship. We expect over the next year to work together to develop more products that can help the end user have a more reliable, efficient, and high performance network."
Du Pont's new PARAGON Intelligent Networking System, a multi-channel, multi-protocol intelligent concentrator, provides maximum reliability for large network installations. The system has extensive redundancy features, high density plug-in cards, and sophisticated network management software based on SNMP. The new Ethernet Multiport Bridge Module will be available in the second quarter of 1992 and will be offered at a list price of $5,995.
The Electro-Optic Products Group has been manufacturing and marketing multimedia LAN systems for commercial, academic and industrial installations since 1987.
