DSS to unveil new designs for sheilas and abayas today.

Dubai: Get a chance to see exciting new ensembles of the Arabic traditional women's wear from Dubai's top fashion trendsetters as the Sheila & Abaya takes centre stage at The Fashion Catwalk, The Dubai Mall on Wednesday.

A Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) signature event, Sheila & Abaya, will captivate audiences this year with creative designs that will highlight the significance of this traditional women's wear in Arabic culture. Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE) has partnered with the London College of Fashion (LCF), along with The Dubai Mall and SEPHORA for this year's fashion event.

"Each year, we see the sheila & abaya transform from a simple piece of clothing to an artistic expression by Dubai's leading and aspiring designers," Suhail Ghobash, Director Events and Festivals Marketing Services, DEPE, said.

"This event has showcased not only the creativity of the designers and the value of the event as a platform for creative expression; it also shows that traditional women's clothing, while keeping cherished values, can also be fashionable," Ghobash added.

For this year's event, six outstanding designs by UAE students will be showcased during the event. A jury composed of top DEPE officials, LCF representatives and UAE's top fashion designer, Amal Murad, will choose the best design along with public votes. The designer of the winning piece will bring home a fully-paid course scholarship at the LCF in Dubai.

Besides the contest, Murad will also share some of her best kept trade secrets to the six participating aspiring designers. Best known for introducing a new type of fabric for use in creating abayas, Murad said that in any design, comfort should not be compromised for style -- they should go hand in hand.

"For me abayas have to be both stylish and comfortable, so women can wear them with confidence," Murad said.

Catch the Sheila & Abaya show on Wednesday at 6.30pm, 7.30pm and 9pm at The Fashion Catwalk of The Dubai Mall. The show will run until Saturday.

Meanwhile, if there's a fashion event for adults, so should there be for kids. Visit the Kids Fashion Week at Deira City Centre to catch the latest trends for the summer collection, party dresses and beach and sports wear. Two shows are scheduled every 6pm and 7:30pm until Saturday.
