DSC AND DDI BEGIN TRIAL OF FIRST PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES NETWORK FOR JAPAN

DSC to provide complete system of major base station management and
 Intelligent Network Elements
 DALLAS, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: DIGI) today announced the start of a Personal Communications Services (PCS) trial with Japan's DDI Corporation. The six-month trial was announced in Japan by DDI Corporation President Nobusuke Kanda during an Opening Ceremony held at the Sapporo Grand Hotel in Sapporo, Hokkaido. DDI is the second largest long distance telephone carrier in Japan and a leading cellular service provider.
 The PCS system under trial, in its Japanese version, is known as Personal Handy Phone (PHP). It has been designed to bring the cost and convenience of wireless communications to a very broad market. The trial involves 30 base stations and 2,000 handsets. Sapporo is the first Japanese city to test PHP.
 DSC's role in the DDI PHP project is centered on providing the major base station management and intelligent network systems. This includes the design, development, integration and testing of the five key network elements utilized in facilitating the provisioning of the Japanese PHP services. In the Sapporo trials, DSC's equipment is integrated with base stations, handsets and initial registration machines which are provided by other vendors.
 The five major products elements designed and delivered to the field trials by DSC include:
 -- MegaHub(R) Signal Transfer Point: Routes network control
 messages.
 -- MegaHub(R) PACE(TM) Service Control Point: Maintains subscriber
 profiles and current location.
 -- Service Management System: Manages network databases and initial
 registrations of PHP subscribers.
 -- Network Control Center: Does network maintenance, surveillance
 and billing collection.
 -- Base Station Management System: Does base station monitoring,
 maintenance and statistic gathering.
 The Personal Handy Phone system uses microcell technology with low-power and long battery life handsets. Microcells are generally located in areas where a person using the Personal Handy Phone would most likely travel. The microcell base stations are also connected to the intelligent network components via an enhanced Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).
 Microcells are located very close together and also operate with very low power. PHP is targeted for the general public, providing cost-efficient mobility for the user.
 DSC has been a major supplier to DDI since 1985 and has provided the majority of switching and intelligent network equipment in DDI's long distance and cellular networks.
