DRS Technologies Awarded $3.3 Million Contract From the U.S. Navy to Develop Airborne Multi-System Controller.

DRS Technologies, Inc. (ASE: DRS) announced today that it has been awarded a $3.3 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop a Multi-System Controller for the test and evaluation of weapons release on board various fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft and from ground-based launch systems.

Development of the Multi-System Controller represents Phase IV of the Airborne Separation Video System (ASVS) program, which was initially awarded to the company in October 1995. Under previously awarded contracts, DRS is producing ASVS units for F/A-18 Hornet strike aircraft.

The award to develop the Multi-System Controller was received from the Naval Air Warfare Center's Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD) in Patuxent River, Maryland. For this contract, DRS will redesign the ASVS for deployment in an AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range, Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) pod. The pod will accommodate up to three ASVS cameras, the Multi-System Controller and other equipment for the capture of weapons separation images. This redesign will allow the ASVS to be utilized on any military test aircraft. The Multi-System Controller also is planned for ground-based applications primarily at weapons test ranges.

Mark S. Newman, DRS Technologies' chairman, president and chief executive officer, stated, "This additional award on the ASVS program is affirmation of our ability to provide technically innovative systems for broad use by tri-service defense communities. Our development efforts under this new contract will greatly enhance the versatility of this system and expand our customer's platform applications for many years to come."

The ASVS is comprised of an electronically-shuttered, high-speed, high-resolution digital imaging camera, a high-density digital data storage device and associated electronics that meet the requirements of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD)-sponsored, tri-service Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program. DRS has incorporated a color capability for the system and miniaturized its high-speed camera to assure compatibility with most air platforms. The company is currently increasing its image resolution for compatibility with most ground application requirements. The ASVS interfaces with a government-furnished air-to-ground data transmission system, allowing camera settings on the ASVS to be previewed on the ground and adjusted by the pilot while in flight, an important feature not offered by other systems. This feature eliminates costly errors in exposure settings and expenses associated with re-testing on another flight. Captured images can be immediately downloaded, analyzed and archived.

The system's application to various tri-service Test and Evaluation Range Operations is expected to lead to a significant reduction in hazardous chemical waste, normally associated with traditional film development methods, and a reduction in costs associated with film processing and digitization.

DRS Technologies provides leading edge products and services to government and commercial markets worldwide. Focused on defense electronics, the company develops and manufactures a broad range of mission critical products, from rugged computers and peripherals to systems and components in the areas of communications, data storage, digital imaging, electro-optics, flight safety and space. The company offers a full complement of technical support and advanced manufacturing services.
