DRIVETIME: MOTORING: Vauxhall's X-treme machine.
THIS is Vauxhall/ Opel's outrageous superfast Astra Coupe concept with monster performance of 187 mph top speed and a face-flattening 0- 62 mph sprint time of 4 seconds.
Highlighting Vauxhall/ Opel's sporting credentials, the phenomenal Astra Coupe X-Treme, is based on the Opel Astra currently competing in the German Touring Car Masters.
Sporting a gull-wing door design, the X-Treme packs an astonishing punch through its 444 bhp engine which delivers its vast power to the rear wheels through a carbon-fibre reinforced clutch, a sequential six-speed, transaxle gearbox and a mechanical-action limited-slip differential.
A number of modifications have been made to ensure that the Astra's monumental performance also has a degree of refinement for the road, so that in town and city traffic the car can be driven at low revs in fifth or sixth gear, just like any other production car.
Most details of the road-going car's suspension are shared with the racing car. Double wishbone suspension is used at front and rear and drivers of the Astra Coupe X-Treme can even emulate the DTM racers by selecting their own personal suspension set-up, as the stabilisers and the shock- absorber bump and rebound settings can be varied to suit.
Some development work has been carried out on the front and rear spoilers of the body to make the Astra Coupe X-Treme a little less radical than the DTM car.
On the inside, the Astra Coupe X-Treme's interior is trimmed to a very high standard using Alcantara and brushed aluminium.
Seat shells are reinforced with carbon fibre and upholstered to a much higher level of comfort. The driver and front passenger are provided with a five-point seat belt harness.
