DRIVETIME: MOTORING: SURPRIUS SUCCESS!; TOYOTA PRIUS.

TOYOTA has announced that orders in the first month for the new Prius, which went on sale in Japan on September 1, totalled 17,500.

The monthly tally was nearly six times greater than the company's official monthly sales target of 3,000 units.

As successor to the original Prius, which debuted in 1997 as the world's first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid vehicle and which has sold more than 120,000 units worldwide, the new Prius was developed around the concept of Hybrid Synergy Drive, an amazing combination of economy and power.

The new Prius not only attains an extremely high fuel efficiency - 100 mpg under Japanese testing conditions which are at a lower speed than for Europe - and ultra-low emissions, but also offers a high level of driver enjoyment through the performance benefits of the newly evolved hybrid power system.

The new Prius will go on sale in the UK next January, with prices and specification for the UK being announced shortly.
