DREXEL UNIVERSITY ISSUES STATEMENT ON FIRE AT PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY HOUSE

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The release was issued today by Drexel University:
The Philadelphia Fire Department was notified at 6:22 a.m. today of a fire at the Drexel University Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house, located at 3405 Powelton Ave., near Drexel's campus.
The building's smoke detection system functioned properly, and all 29 residents of the house evacuated the building safely. There were no injuries reported.
The Fire Department declared the fire under control at 7:20 a.m. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Philadelphia Fire Marshal's office.
According to Diana Hackney, Drexel University's Interim Vice Provost for Student Life, all Pi Kappa Phi residents are being offered temporary housing at Kelly Hall, a University residence hall. Hackney said the American Red Cross has set up temporary headquarters at Kelly Hall to assist the fraternity house residents.
"We're grateful beyond words that no one was hurt," said Hackney. The university is doing everything possible to help the students. Right now we're trying to find out what Drexel can provide them. The entire university community is organizing to collect immediately any necessary articles of clothing and other essential items.
Hackney said the students will be provided free meals at the university's student dining center, and the University Store will donate clothing and textbooks lost in the fire.
Hackney said all the student's parents had been notified of the fire.
Drexel is Philadelphia's second largest private university, enrolling more than 11,000 students.
