DR. WILLIAM E. MAYER SR. ELECTED ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, ALCO INTERNATIONAL GROUP INC.
SAN DIEGO, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alco International Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ALIG) (the "company") announces the election of the Hon. Dr. William E. Mayer Sr. to the position of acting chairman of the board of directors, effective April 12, 1993. Mayer has been a member of Alco's board of directors since June 1992, and will act as chairman until the next shareholders meeting. Mayer is also a consultant to SurgiSafe Inc., a distributor for Alco's infection control products. The president of SurgiSafe Inc. is William Mayer III, a son of Dr. Mayer. Prior to his recent retirement, Mayer was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson as the director of the Department of Mental Health for the State of California in May 1991. The department is responsible for more than 10,000 hospitalized patients and in excess of 320,000 out-patients throughout the state of California, served by five major hospitals and nearly 60 community programs. Mayer was appointed medical director for Achievement and Guidance Centers of America Inc. in October 1990, with oversight responsibility for the medical and psychiatric standards and practices of this rapidly growing managed mental health services firm. From 1989 until 1991, Mayer was director of the International Forum on AIDS research for the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. In this capacity he worked closely with the World Health Organization's Global Program on AIDS. Mayer served as the Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs from 1983 through April 1989, directing a $13 billion annual military health care system. He also directed the development of the military's massive HIV/AIDS screening program. Before assigning him to defense, President Reagan appointed Mayer Assistant Surgeon General under Dr. C. Everett Koop and administrator of the federal Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Mayer has received awards from the Army and Navy, the Marine Corps' Combat Bronze star, the gold medal for leadership from the National Management Association, a national award from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, the Distinguished Service Medal from the Department of Health and Human Services, and (twice) the Distinguished Service Medal from the Department of Defense, from Secretaries Weinberger and Carlucci.
