DR. RUTH SHAW, PRESIDENT OF CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE, NAMED VICE PRESIDENT-CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS, FOR DUKE POWER COMPANY
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) today named Dr. Ruth G. Shaw, president of Central Piedmont Community College here since 1986, as vice president for corporate communications.
Shaw, 44, will head the corporate communications department reporting directly to William H. Grigg, vice chairman of Duke Power.
She succeeds J. Kenneth Clark, who is retiring July 1 after serving 11 years at Duke Power. Shaw assumes her Duke Power responsibilities Sept. 1.
Shaw was named Charlotte's 1991 Woman of the Year at a luncheon just yesterday.
Duke Power recruited Shaw, not vice versa, Grigg said.
"Accurate and effective communications are important for any large corporation," Grigg said. "For a regulated public service company, like Duke Power, it is absolutely critical. We operate under intense public scrutiny.
"Our 1.7 million customers, our 116,000 shareholders, our 18,000 employees, our regulators and the general public have a need and a right to know, among other things, the company's direction, how effectively it delivers its services and its plans to meet the growing electric energy needs of our region," he said.
"In looking for a successor to Ken Clark, we have sought a person who knows our region and its people, a person who is a skilled communicator, a person with a track record of effective community services, a person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, a person with professional media experience, and above all, a person with absolute integrity," Grigg said.
"Ruth Shaw is precisely such a person. She is a world-class communicator. She has made a tremendous impact on this community in numerous volunteer roles. She has effectively led CPCC as its president for the past six years. Early in her career, she worked as a journalist and taught journalism. And she is an admirable human being!" he said.
"We are sad to lose Ruth Shaw as president of Central Piedmont Community College, but wish her the very best in her new career," said William M. Claytor, chairman of the CPCC Board of Trustees.
"She has been a magnificent force not only at CPCC but also in the community at large. I look forward to continuing to work with her in various endeavors and am confident that she will bring even greater luster to one of the nation's truly great companies," he said.
"I have spent 21 years encouraging people to learn, change and grow and I am taking a healthy dose of my own advice," Shaw said. "Needless to say, leaving CPCC is not easy. My six years there have been the capstone of a tremendously rewarding career as a professional educator. It is truly one of the outstanding community colleges in the nation and I have been honored to serve as its president.
"Duke Power's commitment to citizenship and service is real and I am looking forward to joining the Duke Power team," she said. "Corporate communications is a two-way street. It is not just telling. It is listening. Duke Power has a proud tradition of excellence and a strong commitment to change. It is a culture I understand and I'm eager to be a part of it," Shaw said.
Shaw has been president of Central Piedmont Community College, the largest such institution in the state, since 1986. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in English from East Carolina University and a Ph.D. in higher education administration, community college leadership, from the University of Texas at Austin.
She was named one of the nation's top community college leaders in 1988 and was named 1990 Woman of the Year by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community and Junior Colleges. East Carolina University recognized her in 1991 as an Outstanding Alumni and the University of Texas has named her a Distinguished Graduate. The Charlotte Sales and Marketing Executives Inc. last year presented her with its Top Management Award for Outstanding Community Service.
Before her appointment to the presidency of CPCC, she was president of El Centro College of the Dallas County Community College District. Earlier, she served in several positions at the district's Cedar Valley College and had been a faculty member at East Carolina University and Martin Community College.
Her community activities include service on the boards of the Charlotte Chamber, the United Way of Central Carolinas (she chaired the United Way Campaign in 1989), Charlotte YMCA, Charlotte Urban League, the Mecklenburg Boy Scout Council and the Charlotte Rotary Club. Dr. Shaw is also a board member of First Union Corporation and is on an advisory board of the BellSouth Foundation. She is an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
She and her husband, Colin Shaw, have two sons.
