DR. GERTRUDE ELION INDUCTED INTO WOMEN'S HALL OF FAME
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Gertrude

Elion, Scientist Emeritus with Burroughs Wellcome Co., was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in a ceremony Nov. 18 in Arlington, Va. Elion was the 47th woman inducted to the Hall.
Dr. David Barry, vice president of research, development and medical affairs at Burroughs Wellcome, cited Elion's many contributions to medicine in remarks delivered at the ceremony.
"Her research led to the first treatments for leukemia, and herpes infections," Barry said. "It led to the most useful treatment of gout, and even made organ transplantation possible. The work was long and hard and took place over 40 years."
Elion, 73, was selected for her achievement in science, particularly her contributions to the development of important new medicines in the cancer and antiviral fields. She received the Nobel Prize for Medicine along with Dr. George Hitchings, also of Burroughs Wellcome Co., in 1988.
"In spite of her whirlwind schedule," Barry said, "she still manages to be an inspiration to the younger people in our labs, laying the groundwork, providing the principles and guideposts, to help the next generation of our scientists to find new drugs, like AZT, to help even more generations to come."
Elion received a B.A. degree from Hunter College in 1937 and an M.S. degree in chemistry from New York University in 1941. She has received 10 honorary degrees.
After several years of laboratory work and teaching chemistry and physics, she joined Wellcome in 1944 as a biochemist. In 1967, she was appointed head of the Department of Experimental Therapy and continued in that position until 1983, when she retired and became Scientist Emeritus.
The National Women's Hall of Fame was founded in 1968 as the only national institution dedicated to honoring women's achievement. The Hall of Fame is located in Seneca Falls, New York.
Burroughs Wellcome Co., a research-based pharmaceutical company headquartered in Research Triangle Park, N.C., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the The Wellcome Foundation Ltd. of London. Wellcome has a 110-year heritage of commitment to the improvement of human health through innovative medicines for poorly understood or inadequately treated diseases.
