DR. BERNARD FRANKLIN NOMINATED TO FOOD LION, INC. BOARD

 SALISBURY, N.C., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Food Lion, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: FDLN) announced today that educator Dr. Bernard W. Franklin has been nominated to its board of directors. Food Lion's shareholders will vote on Franklin's nomination at their May 6, 1993, annual ahareholders' meeting. "I am very pleased Dr. Franklin has agreed to allow his name to be placed in nomination as a member of our board. His highly regarded leadership in education will benefit our company, employees and shareholders," said Tom Smith, president and chief executive officer of Food Lion, Inc.
 Franklin, 40, is president of Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, N.C. Previously he served as vice president of student affairs at Virginia Union University and assistant vice president of student affairs at Johnson C. Smith University.
 Ralph W. Ketner, 72, co-founder and chairman emeritus of Food Lion, has decided not to stand for re-election to the board of directors at the May shareholders' meeting. Ketner served as president of Food Lion from 1957 to 1981, as chief executive officer from 1981 to 1985, as chairman of the board from 1957 to 1990 and as a director since 1957. "The company owes a debt of gratitude to Ralph Ketner, who's creativity and dedication helped make Food Lion a success," said Tom Smith, "and we will miss his many contributions to our company."
 Franklin received his B.A. in religion from Simpson College in Iowa and a master's degree in education administration from Western Maryland College. He earned a doctorate of education in student personnel administration from the Teacher's College of Columbia University. Franklin is a member of the Board of Directors of Rowan Memorial Hospital, the Salisbury-Rowan Education Foundation, and is chairman of the finance committee and a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
