 DOW CORNING WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE IMPLANT INFORMATION PACKAGE;
 TEMPORARILY SUSPENDS HOTLINE DISCUSSIONS
 MIDLAND, Mich., Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Dow Corning is today advising the FDA that it will continue to provide callers to its Implant Information Center with a written information package on the benefits and risks of silicone breast implants, but it will temporarily suspend hot-line discussion offered by trained staff at the Center.
 Dow Corning established the implant information Center in July 1991 as a resource primarily for women who already have implants and who have been alarmed about the confusing and often sensationalistic media coverage. "We are satisfied that the Center has been effectively reaching this targeted audience. To date, 85 percent of the callers to the Center are women who already have implants," said J. Kermit Campbell, Group Vice President, U.S. Operations. "The remaining callers are usually relatives or close friends of implant recipients. Only a very small minority of callers are prospective patients."
 The Implant Information Center provides two major resources -- a written information package and a toll-free hotline -- to callers seeking information on silicone implants. The written information package provides a detailed review of the benefits and risks of silicone implants. The package has been reviewed by experts and was submitted to the FDA in July 1991 prior to the establishment of the Center. The toll-free hotline is staffed by trained personnel to respond to callers' questions and concerns. The average phone call to the Center has lasted 40 minutes.
 Dow Corning is temporarily suspending discussions on the hot-line as it reviews its training procedures to ensure that hot-line discussions remain consistent with its published information package. "We intend to consult directly with the FDA as we review our training procedures," commented Campbell. "We consulted with the FDA prior to establishing the Center, and we intend to continue involving them in our efforts to provide accurate information to a concerned public. Once the training review is satisfactorily completed, we expect to resume providing hot- line discussion to respond to callers' concerns."
 "We established the Center because we thought it was the compassionate thing to do," said Campbell. "This center provides valuable service to the thousands of women who are seeking information on implants in the context of an increasingly sensationalistic media environment. We still strive to continue to provide the Center's highly needed service because we are convinced that it is the right thing to do."
