DOW CORNING NOTIFIES FDA OF PMAA WITHDRAWAL
MIDLAND, Mich., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Consistent with its

decision to not resume sales and production of breast implants, Dow Corning today notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it is withdrawing its Pre-market Approval Applications for silicone breast implants. This action is one step in the overall process of withdrawing from the breast implant market.
The company also notified FDA that it has begun to retrieve unused implants from the medical practitioners who are our customers and anticipates receiving responses from all customers within 30 days.
On March 19, 1992, Dow Corning announced that it would not resume sales and production of silicone breast implants, a product line which represented less than 1 percent of the company's revenues and has not been profitable over its lifetime. The action was taken due to the projected limited market for the breast implants and was not due to alleged safety issues. Dow Corning remains convinced that silicone breast implants do not represent an unreasonable risk and fulfill an important public health need.
