DOUBLE VISION! DARTS: PDC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; Blurry-eyed Barney banking on his barmy palmy method to hit the winning shots at Ally Pally.

Byline: MIKE WALTERS

BARMY Raymond van Barneveld has turned to a bizarre facepalm ritual to save him from wearing glasses on the oche.

For years, the five-times world champion has practised Zen meditation to boost his performance. Now he does a routine known as CAPTION style in here different versions style in here different versions the Bates Method - where he rubs his hands together, places the warm palms over his eyes and the heat from his hands gives him extra optical energy.

It worked for the Dutchman at the William Hill PDC World Championship on Monday, wiping out Rowby-John Rodriguez 3-0 to book a second-round date with Jamie Caven at Alexandra Palace. Barney, 47, pulled off 167 and 170 check-outs and his three-dart average in the third set was a staggering 125.25.

He said: "Last year my manager thought my eyesight was getting bad and although I won the Premier League and the World Cup of Darts this year, I noticed a difference.

When I went back to the hotel after playing or practising, I could not read the tickertape at the bottom of the TV screen.

"So I started wearing glasses at the European Championship and it went well, but I was 9-7 up against Michael van Gerwen and lost 10-9. "Then I lost to Keegan Brown at the Grand Slam, so I decided I didn't want to rely on glasses to the extent I can't play darts without them.

"I've practised for the last three weeks without them and against Rodriguez I managed three 12-dart legs - so I know I can still do it without glasses.

"Now, when I have blurred vision, I do the palming for 10 minutes every day and afterwards it is fine.

"On YouTube and Google you find people asking, 'Why is a doctor or optician not telling us about this?' Of course they won't because they want to sell you glasses or laser surgery.

"I made an appointment in January to have my eyes lasered, now I have cancelled it."
