THE family suffered a second tragedy just 14 months after Moira died.

Her widower, Alexander, 63, was battered to death in the street as he headed home from a night out.

Today, two of the teenagers originally charged over the death will be sentenced.

And a third, who has been declared insane, is likely to be sent to a state hospital next week.

Reporting of the case had been banned until yesterday.

Alexander, a grandfather, was waiting outside a Cumbernauld pub for a taxi when he was set upon.

The retired university lecturer was repeatedly kicked on the head and body and his head was stamped on.

He died of his injuries in hospital. As police hunted for the killers Alexander's daughter, Moira, 42, madeanemotional plea for help.

She said: "If anybody has any information, please come forward."

And her sister, Laura, 38, added: "We lost our mum just over a year ago.It affected my father the most.

"He lost weight and was fairly frail when the incident took place."

Two15-year-old boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and a 17-year-old, Christopher Slonaker, were charged with murder.

Their trial started at the High Court in Glasgow in September.

Psychiatrists ruled that one of the 15-year-olds was insane and, after a hearing, Lady Paton ruled the boy responsible for the death.

Slonaker and the other teenager then admitted a reduced charge of assaulting and robbing Alexander
