DOSKOCIL DISCUSSES STRIKE IMPACT AND NEW LABOR AGREEMENT
HUTCHINSON, Kan., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Doskocil Companies Incorporated (NASDAQ: DOSK) announced today that as a result of the labor strike which lasted almost four weeks during May at four of its facilities, the company will report a loss for the second quarter ending June 27, 1992.
In commenting on the company's earnings outlook, John T. Hanes, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "Due to the strike, we have reduced our operating profit expectations for the second quarter and for the year by four to five million dollars." Hanes added, "Despite this development, the company expects the second quarter loss to be somewhat less than a year ago when Doskocil reported a net loss before reorganization items of approximately $2.0 million."
Hanes went on to say, "While we are disappointed that the strike temporarily interrupted the company's progress in earnings improvement since its successful emergence from bankruptcy in 1991, we are gratified that an agreement was ultimately reached that both the company and its employees found acceptable. Since the strike ended, all employees have returned to work and full production levels have been attained." Hanes said, "We expect the strike to have no material impact on the continuing business after the end of the second quarter."
The new agreement provides for wage increases over the three-year term of the agreement and a comprehensive modification of the health care benefits for active and retired employees. The modifications to health care benefits will substantially reduce the company's future health care obligations and complement the changes made to the company's retiree health care benefit plans at the time of the recent reorganization.
Doskocil specializes in processing and marketing boneless hams, sausage, bacon, and other branded and processed meat products for the foodservice, delicatessen and retail markets. The company also supplies pepperoni, beef and pork toppings to the pizza industry.
