OBERPFAFFENHOFEN, Germany, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the new

Dornier 328 regional aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight. Eight weeks after its well-attended rollout, at 1:03 p.m., the aircraft took off from Oberpfaffenhofen Airfield with Dornier Chief Test Pilot Meinhardt Feuersenger and his co-pilot Hans Mouwens at the controls. After a test program lasting nearly two hours, the aircraft landed safely back at Oberpfaffenhofen.
"A superb aircraft," enthusiastically reported Feuersenger after the landing. "It handled as we expected. We checked all the systems and just opened up an initial, limited flight envelope up to a speed of 200 knots/370 km/h." To evaluate the handling, the pilots flew the aircraft in several configurations, for example, with the landing gear extended and retracted and with various flap settings.
"A great day for the German aircraft industry," said Juergen E. Schremmp, chairman of the board of Deutsche Aerospace. Dornier Luftfahrt is a Deutsche Aerospace company and is responsible for the development, production and marketing of the Dornier 328. "The first flight is the crowning event of years of work and a great achievement by the entire Dornier team," he added. "The Dornier 328 is convincing proof of our ability to completely develop and build commercial aircraft in Germany which meet the requirements of tomorrow's worldwide marketplace."
On its maiden flight, the Dornier 328 climbed to 10,000 feet/3,000 meters in VFR conditions, over the southern Bavarian lakes. The onboard test equipment, including the sensors, were also checked during the first flight. No less than 470 individual parameters can be sampled simultaneously. A Dornier 228 acted as chase aircraft, piloted by Dornier test pilots Nils Meister and Gerd- Rainer Selleske.
The Dornier 328 is the most modern and comfortable aircraft in its class. Up to now, 148 aircraft have been sold, predominantly to North American customers. The Dornier 328 is powered by turboprops, yet it has achieved comparable levels of comfort space per passenger and cabin noise as the Airbus. Its maximum cruise speed of 345 KTAS/640 km/h is approaching that of jet aircraft. A major characteristic of this aircraft, built under German responsibility, is the international program participation. Companies from Canada, Italy, Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States, among others, contribute to the Dornier 328.

Aside from the 19-seater Dornier 228, the Dornier 328, for 30-33 passengers, today is the only commercial aircraft built under German program leadership. In the past three years, Dornier Luftfahrt, a Deutsche Aerospace company, has developed this regional aircraft together with international partners and suppliers from many countries including the United States, Canada, Italy, Korea and the United Kingdom.
The Dornier 328, which combines the latest technology and highest comfort with low operating costs, is already considered a success in terms of sales. A total of 78 firm orders and 70 options has been signed, representing a production backlog of two years.
The Dornier 328 achieves its cruising speed of 345 KTAS/640 km/h with two modern Pratt & Whitney Canada PW 119A turboprops driving especially quiet six-bladed Hartzell propellers. The range of the Dornier 328 with a full payload of 7,605 pounds and the corresponding maximum take-off weight of 27,558 pounds is 700 NM.
