A GOVERNMENT department formerly run by Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness has refused to compensate the victims of paedophile Lindsay Brown, the Sunday People can reveal.

Bureaucrats at the Department of Education have decided not to pay, even though the lives of young boys were ruined by the former grammar school vice-principal.

And they have also told Brown's victims they are not entitled to the costs for private therapy.

The disclosure will spark an outcry, given that the department was able to claw back Brown's pounds 60,000 golden handshake.

Brown, 58, a 'pillar' of the Presbyterian Church, was jailed in January 1998 after he was found guilty of abusing nine boys at Bangor Grammar School.

He preyed on boys, some as young as 11, for 30 years.
