DONNELLY RECEIVES 'R&D 100' AWARD FOR ELECTROCHROMIC MIRROR SYSTEM
HOLLAND, Mich., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) has been awarded the prestigious "R&D 100" Award by Research and Development Magazine for its new GLARESTOPPER(TM) electrochromic mirror system for heavy trucks. The award was presented at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago today and states that this development is being recognized as "one of the 100 most technologically significant products of the year."
Donnelly's new GLARESTOPPER exterior mirror system for heavy trucks uses solid-state electrochromic coatings in conjunction with electrical current to darken the mirror and reduce glare. The driver simply "dials in" the level of reflectivity desired in the mirror and the system darkens or lightens to the degree desired. These new mirrors greatly improve visibility, safety, and comfort for the professional driver. Drivers of heavy trucks now have more control over their work environment and the stress and fatigue of long-haul truck driving is greatly reduced.
Kathy Bolhous, product line manager for Donnelly's GLARESTOPPER electrochromic mirror system, stated:
"The development of Donnelly's new solid-state electrochromic technology, used in the manufacture of the GLARESTOPPER truck mirror, is the result of many years of research and development. Many talented people contributed to this important achievement.
"The GLARESTOPPER truck mirror is the largest area application of this technology that is commercially available. We believe this new mirror system offers important safety advantages to the professional driver and we are very excited by the enthusiastic response that we have received from fleet drivers throughout the country."
This product is being produced by a joint venture between Donnelly Corporation and Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI) in Santa Rosa, Calif. Donnelly developed the electrochromic coatings used in the mirrors and OCLI helped develop a sophisticated manufacturing process to commercialize the new technology.
GLARESTOPPER electrochromic truck mirrors will be exhibited from Sept. 24 through Oct. 22, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Scientific and technological breakthroughs from many other outstanding companies will also be featured. Some of the companies which were recognized include: AT&T Bell Laboratories, Dow Corning Corporation, DuPont Company, Eastman Kodak Company, Hewlett-Packard Company, Litton Systems, Inc., Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Stanford University, Sandia National Laboratories, etc.
