DONNELLY INTRODUCES REVOLUTIONARY NEW AUTOMOTIVE VISION TECH SYSTEM: INTELLIGENT VISION SYSTEM ELIMINATES HEADLIGHT GLARE

HOLLAND, Mich., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) today introduced a new breakthrough in automotive vision technology that will revolutionize the future of automotive vision sys- tems and radically advance existing technology to eliminate headlight glare in rearview and sideview mirrors.
Donnelly's innovative INTELLIGENT VISION(TM) System employs a single video microchip and a sophisticated advanced information processing sys- tem that detects glare behind the car and then selectively dims each mirror on the vehicle independently. Donnelly is the first company in the world to offer this advanced technology, which will be available to customers for 1996 model year vehicles.
"With our INTELLIGENT VISION System, drivers will no longer have to adjust to, or compensate for blinding rearview and sideview mirror glare," said Dwane Baumgardner, chairman of the board and CEO of Donnel- ly. "The INTELLIGENT VISION System will enhance driver safety, comfort and convenience, and will automatically eliminate dangerous headlight distraction."
Donnelly's INTELLIGENT VISION System combines electronic vision -- a single video microchip -- with another major development involving solid film electrochromic mirrors. Donnelly's new advanced solid elec- trochromic material offers several important advantages over existing materials, including day-glare protection, selective dimming, improved optics, and, like Donnelly's other mirror products, the INTELLIGENT VI- SION System is shatterproof. This solid electrochromic material is also practical for window applications.
As the single video microchip scans the area behind the car and as light conditions change, the system compensates for rising or falling light intensities in the rearview and sideview mirrors by automatically darkening or lightening each mirror independently to reduce or increase the amount of light reflected to the driver's eye.
In the fully integrated system, when the lights of a trailing car are shining directly into the interior rearview mirror, it is darkened, while the sideview mirrors remain lighter and more reflective. As the trailing car moves to the left, the interior rearview mirror lightens, as the left sideview mirror darkens to reduce the reflected glare. If the trailing car then moves to the right, the mirrors' tinting process adjusts accordingly, automatically lightening the left sideview mirror, darkening and then lightening the rearview mirror, and ultimately, darkening the right sideview mirror.
"The INTELLIGENT VISION System is another example of how Donnelly brings increased value and capabilities to our customers," said Baum- gardner. "While this system utilizes the latest advancements in automo- tive vision, it will be immediately affordable and could, over time, be as common as cruise control is today."
The immediate application of this technology is designed to enhance driver vision and safety. But other applications of the INTELLIGENT VI- SION System could include monitoring and controlling vehicle systems such as external vehicle lighting and security sentinels.
The future, however, holds even greater promise.
Long-term applications of the INTELLIGENT VISION System are expected to redefine several key elements of vehicle engineering and design. With single video microchip devices mounted to the rear bumper and doors, drivers will be able to see everything in their wake by looking at a video screen integrated into the instrument panel. With the need for sideview mirrors eliminated, vehicles can be freed of external ob- structions and reap the benefits of reduced drag, increased fuel ef- ficiency and dramatic improvements in design.
