DONNELLY CORPORATION ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING PATENT LITIGATION

HOLLAND, Mich., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Dwane Baumgardner, chairman and chief executive officer of Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON), issued the following statement regarding yesterday's (Wednesday, April 7) decision by the United States District Court in Grand Rapids in favor of Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: GNTX) relating to Gentex's U.S. Patent No. 5,128,799.
 Baumgardner stated:
"On April 2, 1993, a jury ruled that Donnelly had not succeeded in proving that Gentex's '799 patent is invalid and the jury refused to award the $30 million in damages requested by Gentex ... instead, the Court awarded Gentex only $2.2 million. In addition, the jury had offered an advisory opinion to Judge Gibson that Donnelly had not succeeded in proving that this patent is unenforceable. Judge Gibson has now ruled to uphold that opinion.
"Although we are very disappointed with this decision and continue to believe in our original position, the technology affected by this ruling is an older form of electrochromics that is now superseded by Donnelly's newer INTELLIGENT VISION(TM) System which uses a unique electrochromic solid film in conjunction with a revolutionary new video microchip technology. Donnelly has already discontinued production and sale of this older electrochromic technology and all of Donnelly's electrochromic mirror customers are now being offered solid film technology. We are very pleased with the favorable market response that we have received thus far with our new INTELLIGENT VISION(TM) System."
