DONNELLY CORPORATION EXPANDS PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN KENTUCKY

DONNELLY CORPORATION EXPANDS PRODUCTION CAPACITY IN KENTUCKY
HOLLAND, Mich., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) is pleased to announce plans to establish a modular window production facility in Mount Sterling, Ky. This new facility will be dedicated to production of modular windows for automotive manufacturers operating in the lower Midwest.
Modular window technology was developed by Donnelly in the mid-1970s and has revolutionized the manufacture of automotive window systems during the past 15 years. Modular window systems are manufactured by molding all of the components for windows, including the glass, trim, and attachment studs, into a single unit using plastics. This single unit assembly lowers total systems cost, provides higher quality, and allows greater design freedom than conventional windows.
Donnelly is a leading producer of modular window systems to all of the domestic car makers and has, in recent years, developed new modular window business for Japanese "transplant" manufacturers operating in the United States. Donnelly's total modular window sales currently exceed $100 million per year.
John Donnelly, vice president for Modular Window Systems at Donnelly, stated:
"We are very pleased with the growth that we have experienced in our Modular Window Group during the past 10 years and we believe that this growth will continue throughout the 1990s. Our new facility in Mount Sterling, Ky., will be centrally located to many of the largest automotive manufacturers in the United States who represent an important business opportunity for Donnelly.
"The community of Mount Sterling has extended a warm welcome to Donnelly Corporation ... both city and state officials have been extremely supportive throughout the many months of our evaluation. We are grateful for the outstanding work that has been done by our new friends and we look forward to becoming the newest citizen of Mount Sterling."
Mount Sterling operations will be the fourth Donnelly facility dedicated to modular window production. Two facilities are located in Holland and produce approximately 60 window programs for 30 different vehicles. Another operation is located in Mount Pleasant, Tenn. The Tennessee operation is a joint venture between Donnelly and Asahi Glass of Japan and is called D & A Technology, Inc. D & A Technology produces all of the modular windows for the General Motors' Saturn vehicles. Because the market for modular windows continues to increase rapidly, production levels in these operations are expected to remain stable.
