DONNELLY CITED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10 COMPANIES TO WORK FOR IN AMERICA

HOLLAND, Mich., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) today was named among the "top 10" in the new book "The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America." The book provides a detailed look at the most exceptional workplaces in the United States today. Authors Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz have revised their 1984 bestseller of the same name, evaluating companies in six categories: Pay/Benefits, Opportunities for Growth, Job Security, Pride in Work/ Company, Openness/Fairness, and Camaraderie/Friendship.
The authors interviewed thousands of employees throughout the country to come up with a roster of firms where people are happy to work because they are treated with respect. Levering and Moskowitz stated:
"Most companies still offer dreadful environments. The 100 companies profiled in the book may account for only a small fraction of the total U.S. work force, but as exemplars they represent a growing force. They are magnets for people looking for meaningful work. They are models for companies trying to get it right. In those two important senses, they may herald the future."
After completing their findings and rating each company, Levering and Moskowitz singled out the following 10 companies as the best of the best:
Beth Israel Hospital of Boston, Boston
 Delta Airlines, Atlanta
 Donnelly Corporation, Holland, Mich.
 Federal Express, Memphis, Tenn.
 Fel-Pro, Skokie, Ill.
 Hallmark Cards, Kansas City, Mo.
 Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla.
 Rosenbluth International, Philadelphia
 Southwest Airlines, Dallas
USAA (United Services Automobile Association), San Antonio
The authors note that the future competitiveness of U.S. industry may well lie in adopting the attitudes exemplified by the best places to work. Some of the attitudes cited include employee participation in decision-making, increased sensitivity to work/family issues, more equitable distribution of wealth through profit-sharing, greater trust between management and employees, training, employee empowerment, and a sense of fun. These characteristics also contribute to operating a serious, profit-making business.
Dwane Baumgardner, chairman of the board of Donnelly Corporation, stated:
"We are deeply honored to have been cited by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz as one of the best companies to work for in America.
"Donnelly has enjoyed a participative culture for over 40 years, long before it was accepted as good managerial practice. This supportive climate has fostered a high degree of employee involvement and commitment. The benefits for Donnelly have been too numerous to mention. Today, Donnelly is a dynamic and successful company in a highly competitive business environment ... uniquely shaped by many talented people. We are proud of what has been achieved. We are even more proud that it was achieved in a way that enhanced the value of each individual person associated with our company. Our future will continue to be built on the fundamental beliefs of empowering people and supporting their individual and collective growth.
"The work of Levering and Moskowitz has cited two other companies in the Holland/Zeeland area as among the '100 Best.' Both Haworth of Holland and Herman Miller of Zeeland were also listed. We would like to offer our congratulations to both of our industrial neighbors and to the community at large. Many fine people in our community work in our companies or are associated with us in some way. Their support and contributions are greatly appreciated."
Levering and Moskowitz, authors of the 1984 edition of "The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America," are co-authors, with Michael Katz, of five books about American business, including "Everybody's Business: A Field Guide to the 400 Leading Companies in America." Levering is also the author of "A Great Place to Work: What Makes Some Employers So Good -- and Most So Bad." Moskowitz, author of "The Global Marketplace," has co-authored "Working Mother's" annual survey of the best places for working mothers since 1986. The authors live in the San Francisco Bay area.
