DONNELLY ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT ON PATENT LITIGATION

HOLLAND, Mich., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly (AMEX: DON) is pleased to announce that a settlement agreement has been reached with Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX) of Zeeland, Mich., regarding patent litigation between the two companies. This litigation involved four Gentex patents. Gentex claimed that these patents covered various aspects of Donnelly's older electrochromic automotive mirror products.
Dwane Baumgardner, Chairman of the Board of Donnelly Corporation, stated:
"The patent litigation between Donnelly and Gentex represented a distraction and financial burden that we felt was no longer justified in light of the technological advancements that have been made by Donnelly and will be introduced in its new mirror products. While Donnelly continues to believe strongly in its position regarding these patents, they are no longer considered relevant to Donnelly's future product offerings. Resolving the dispute via this agreement avoids further legal expenses and represents a cost savings for our company.
"Donnelly is moving forward with newer automotive vision systems, such as the recently introduced INTELLIGENT VISION(TM) System, and is also rapidly developing large new business opportunities, particularly in automotive windows, complete exterior mirror systems, and interior lighting and trim."
As a result of the settlement, the two further trials scheduled for June and August, 1993, have been canceled. By agreement, the terms of the settlement will remain confidential.
