DONNELLY AND LECTRON FORM ALLIANCE TO ADD FEATURES TO REAR VIEW MIRROR SYSTEMS

DONNELLY AND LECTRON FORM ALLIANCE TO ADD FEATURES
                       TO REAR VIEW MIRROR SYSTEMS
HOLLAND, Mich., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnelly Corporation (AMEX: DON) of Holland and Lectron Products, Inc. of Rochester Hills, Mich., have completed a technical and marketing alliance agreement to provide a series of innovative new mirror systems with electronic features to the automotive industry.
Through this new agreement, various Lectron products including reminder "chimes" and exterior lighting controls, such as "autodimmer," "autolamp," and "illuminated entry," will become available in combination with the Donnelly range of rear view mirror systems which currently include such features as lights and compasses.
The two companies believe that this alliance will offer greater flexibility to car companies in their design efforts by allowing items from the currently crowded instrument panel area to be located in the interior rear view mirror. This has become increasingly important with the latest trend toward driver's and passenger's side airbags which greatly reduce the amount of space available for many other features that are also in high demand from car buyers. A cooperative working arrangement between Donnelly and Lectron is also expected to provide an opportunity to further simplify systems, improve quality, and reduce overall systems cost through improved integration of features.
Jack Withrow, president of Lectron and former executive vice president of Product Development at Chrysler Corporation, noted that:
"Automotive design today is all about flexibility. In order to compete, the car companies have to be able to design more features into less space while, at the same time, paying attention to aesthetics and aerodynamics."
Ron VandenBerg, senior vice president for Donnelly's Automotive Vision Systems Group, also stated:
"Donnelly's commitment to new product development and innovation have helped us become a leader in the area of automotive vision. This commitment will become more critical than ever in the highly competitive automotive industry of the future. Strategic alliances enhance our ability to meet the increasingly diverse needs of our customers and support the future growth of our company."
