 DON W. HARRELL NAMED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AT TIAA-CREF
 NEW YORK, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The appointment of Don W. Harrell as executive vice president for external affairs of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Fund was announced today by Dr. Clifton R. Wharton, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer.
 Harrell, 54, currently is administrative assistant to U.S. Senator David Pryor, of Arkansas, a position he has held since 1981.
 "Don Harrell brings to TIAA-CREF an excellent background in public affairs as well as extensive experience in the education community we serve," Wharton said. "These talents should serve TIAA-CREF well as we continue to develop and offer new products and services and compete in an increasingly complex business world."
 Harrell's appointment is effective March 1. He will succeed Robert Perrin, 66, who is retiring.
 The External Affairs area of TIAA-CREF has wide-ranging responsibilities including corporate communications policy, media and public relations, publications and policyholder reports, policyholder and institutional research, and liaison with Washington-based educational associations.
 An Arkansas native, Harrell joined the faculty of the University of Houston in 1968 after receiving his Ph.D. in English from Vanderbilt University. He served as a tenured associate professor of English at UH until 1975 when be became administrative assistant and press secretary to then-Governor Pryor, of Arkansas.
 In 1978, he moved to the university affairs staff of the State University of New York system in Albany as a communications associate. In 1981, he rejoined now-Senator Pryor in Washington.
 Harrell received his bachelor's degree from Hendrix College and masters' degrees from the American University and George Washington University.
 TIAA-CREF was created in 1918 as an integral part of the academic community to provide for the retirement security of faculty and staff of universities, colleges, private schools, research organizations and related non-profit education institutions. It currently serves more than 1.4 million persons in some 4,700 institutions.
