DON'T DIE LIKE DINGHY DAD AND HIS GIRL.

Byline: By Gayle Ritchie

ACCIDENT investigators have issued a safety warning to families ahead of the boating season.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch say they want to prevent a repeat of the deaths of a father and his young daughter on Loch Lomond.

Angus Buchanan, 45, and Holly, 13, of Glasgow, were killed when their dinghy lurched, throwing them into the water, on March 13. His other daughter Chloe, 15, remained on board and was rescued by anglers.

Yesterday, the MAIB issued a safety bulletin which said a faulty steering system and lack of basic safety equipment - including lifejackets, flares and a radio - may have led to the double fatality.

The MAIB investigation also revealed the dinghy's hydraulic steering system had been short of oil and in poor condition.

They said: 'The boat was travelling at full speed when it suddenly lurched, throwing the owner and his younger daughter out of the boat.

'The elder teenager was thrown to the deck but remained in the boat which, because the kill-cord was not in use, continued away from the two people in the water.'

The MAIB, who will issue a full report at a later date, said there were important safety lessons to be learned from the tragedy
