DOMINICAN ORDER AN APOLOGY.

On 12 August 2003, we published two articles concerning the release from prison of sex offender Vincent Mercer, and stated he was being housed by the Dominican Order at St Mary's Priory, Tallaght, Dublin where retreats for children were hosted. We are now aware that this was incorrect and that on release Fr Mercer was taken to the Dominican Priory in Kilkenny before being taken to a residential treatment centre in England.

We accept that the Dominican Order did not expose any children in its care to risk of sexual assault as a result and did not seek to conceal such risk from persons availing of the facilities offered by the Order. Any suggestion that the Dominican Order is unfit to have responsibility for the care of children is entirely unfounded. Under the leadership of its Provincial, Fr Gearoid Manning O.P., the Dominican Order observes the highest standards in ensuring the protection of children in their care.

We very much regret any distress or embarrassment caused to the Dominican Order and to Fr Manning O.P., and take this opportunity to apologise for our error. As a mark of our regret we have agreed to make a donation to a charity nominated by the Dominican Order: The Lucy Faithfull Foundation for its UK and Ireland project "Stop it Now".
