DOFASCO, NKK AND NATIONAL STEEL DEDICATE JOINT VENTURE GALVANIZING LINE

WINDSOR, Ontario, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- DNN Galvanizing Corp., a joint venture of Dofasco Inc. of Canada, NKK Corp. of Japan and National Steel Corp. (NYSE: NS) of the United States, today dedicated its new, $240 million (U.S.) hot-dip galvanizing line here.
The facility, which incorporates advanced continuous galvanizing technology developed by NKK, will produce 400,000 tons annually of high-quality coated steel for automotive customers in the United States and Canada. It is located on a 28-acre site in the Ojibway Industrial Park near the Detroit River.
DNN is owned 50 percent by Dofasco, 40 percent by NKK and 10 percent by National Steel. It will operate as a toll coating line, with Dofasco and National Steel each marketing and distributing one-half of its output. Each of the two steel companies will supply the cold-rolled coils to meet its share of the production.
The line has been modeled after the No. 2 galvanizing line at NKK's Fukuyama Works in Japan. NKK supplied the process equipment and furnished technical assistance during the facility's design, construction and start-up. It will also provide operating assistance.
The facility incorporates an electrolytic cleaning section, a vertical annealing furnace, induction galvannealing, tempering and tension leveling. It has a 100 percent closed loop computer control system for all line processes.
DNN will provide galvanized product up to 72 inches in width in a variety of coating thicknesses to meet critical automotive outer body panel needs. Substrate will be furnished by Dofasco's facilities in Hamilton, and National Steel's mills in Detroit and Granite City, Ill.
Dofasco is Canada's second-largest integrated steel company, with production facilities located in Hamilton. Dofasco produces flat rolled steel products in coils and cut-lengths, including cold rolled, hot rolled and plate, prepainted, tinplate, motor lamination and coated. In 1992, it had sales of $2.0 billion (Canadian) and shipments of 3,419,000 tons.

It employs about 22,700 people and manufactures a full range of steel products including hot, cold and coated rolled sheets, plates, bars and shapes, pipes and tubes.
