DOE SELECTS MOLTEN METAL TECHNOLOGY'S CEP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP

BOSTON, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Molten Metal Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MLTN) today announced its selection by the United States Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) under the Planned Research and Development Announcement program. Through a three phase program, the DOE intends to provide over $200 million during the next 8 years for the implementation of Molten Metal Technology's Catalytic Extraction Processing (CEP) technology for a variety of problematic U.S. DOE wastes. Funding for the first phase of the program is $1.6 million for trials to be completed in 1994 at Molten Metal Technology's recently constructed Recycling-R&D Facility. Formal contract negotiations are underway for the first phase, funding for the later phases will be subject to the completion of specific milestones.
Molten Metal Technology's president William M. Haney III noted that "This development program is a strategic milestone for at least two reasons. First, it demonstrates new, broader waste applications for CEP and second this will be our most significant commitment-to-date from the U.S. Government, a key customer for our technology." It is estimated that the U.S. Government will spend over $200 billion on environmental projects during the next three decades.
Molten Metal Technology is an environmental technology company commercializing a breakthrough proprietary recycling technology known as Catalytic Extraction Processing (CEP). CEP makes valuable products from wastes by dissolving them in a molten metal bath. Broadly applicable to a wide variety of hazardous and non hazardous wastes, CEP has the potential to obviate the need for incineration and landfilling.
