DOE LAUDS LAUNCH OF FEDERAL EXPRESS 'CLEANFLEET'

DOE LAUDS LAUNCH OF FEDERAL EXPRESS 'CLEANFLEET'
WASHINGTON, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The launching of over 100

alternative fueled delivery vans by Federal Express in Southern California is a landmark demonstration project and a major step forward in efforts to evaluate the performance characteristics of alternative fuels, according to Secretary of Energy James D. Watkins.
Federal Express has announced that its new fleet of 113 new package delivery vans will test five types of fuels: methanol (M85), compressed natural gas, electricity, propane and reformulated gasoline. DOE is funding $2.1 million of the $6.5 million study.
"Federal Express is to be congratulated for joining a coalition that includes federal, state and local agencies, vehicle manufacturers and utilities," Watkins said. "It once again demonstrates that, working together, business and government can make great strides in reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil and cleaning up the environment, two essential elements of President Bush's National Energy Strategy."
Watkins also praised the South Coast Air Quality Management District for assembling the coalition, which includes the Environmental Protection Agency, Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet, as well as ARCO, Chevron, and the Southern California Gas Company.
The two-year demonstration project will provide test data on performance, reliability, safety, maintenance and durability. The project will include three evaluations of vehicles at the California State Air Resources Board emissions laboratories, and detailed record-keeping on all vehicles. It is expected to conclude in June 1994.
Each of the vehicles in the fleet uses a "dedicated" fuel supply, thereby operating only on the specific fuel type for which it was built.
The technical contractor for the project is Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus, Ohio.
