DODGE VIPER GTS COUPE CONCEPT CAR UNVEILED TO WORLD AT L.A. AUTO SHOW

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The launch of the Dodge Viper sports car has been one of the success stories of 1992. In a real sense it began in Los Angeles since the Viper's original production announcement was made there. The first production Viper was shown a year ago at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show. And the first production Vipers were delivered to Los Angeles this spring. Because Los Angeles is home to a rich American sports car heritage, it is fitting that the first public showing of the Viper GTS Coupe concept car also takes place there.
The small team that developed the Viper and its colleagues from Chrysler Design drew upon the image and spirit of immortal grand touring competition cars like the Ferrari 250 GTO and Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe as inspiration for this latest one-of-a-kind idea car. It has all the muscle and personality of a purebred racing car.
The Viper GTS Coupe is based on the Dodge Viper R/T 10, using the roadster's 400-horsepower V-10 engine, 6-speed transmission, suspension and chassis. The coupe's design takes the Viper philosophy of back-to-basics in a new and different direction.
New elements that define the Viper Coupe's race car image include a hood-mounted NACA intake for cold air ram induction to the engine; hood-mounted exhaust louvers for scavenging press and heat from the engine compartment and front wheel housings; roof blisters for greater head and helmet clearance; dual rear-routed exhaust pipes; a fuel filler located under a cast-aluminum quick-release racing fuel cap feeding a bladder-type fuel cell; interior black-surfaced, non- glare crash pad, and black-faced gauges with white graphics; a competition five-point aircraft-type belt harness with a wrist-turn quick release; and an emergency fire extinguisher mounted for quick release.
Chrysler (NYSE: C) has no plans to go into production with this vehicle but is anxiously awaiting the reaction of the media and public to its display at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
