DOD-IBWG SELECTS PLASTIC PRODUCT FROM KING OF PRUSSIA
MANUFACTURER FOR USE IN CRITICAL PARTS PACKAGING
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Defense-Instrument Bearing Working Group (DOD-IBWG) has selected a specialized plastic from Packaging Science Inc. (PSI), as the intimate wrap to protect critical instrument bearings from corrosion during shipping and storage.
The announcement was made by Thomas C. Hough, president of the firm.
"Our product, MP-35, will now be the protection of choice for instrument bearings shipped for use in military aircraft, missiles and space craft," Hough said. "We believe that this will give us a tremendous increase in business."
The decision to use MP-35 was made earlier this week at a series of Government/Industry meetings is Pensacola, Fla. The DOD-IBWG has been investigating the solution to problems involving shipping and storage of critical parts. MP-35 was found to have superior oxygen barrier properties, thereby providing better protection for parts.
"Instrument bearings are shipped all over the world and under all conditions," Hough pointed out. "They will sometimes sit on a shelf for years before they are used. When it comes time to use the bearings, they often are unusable because chemical contamination introduced from the plastic bags in which they are stored.
"Tests performed under a variety of conditions show that our chemically inert product protects these critical metal parts from deterioration much better than products previously used," he said.
As a result, the military has changed its packaging specifications to include MP-35 as the wrap of choice.
Besides MP-35, PSI manufactures and markets MP-30, MP-38 and S-23 for civilian and commercial markets.
PSI is a firm that produces packaging material with superior oxygen barrier properties that protects critical parts from corrosion during shipping or storage. PSI, which was formed in 1991 specifically to manufacture and market specialized plastics, said it expects it products to be used in automotive, aerospace bearing and other precision metal industries. Initially used to protect high-tech bearings for export markets, the company said it expects domestic firms to utilize PSI packaging material to increase shelf life of critical parts.
