DOCTORS COUNCIL RELEASES LETTER TO NEW YORK CITY
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST BOARD
NEW YORK, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Doctors Council today released the following:
Following is a copy of a letter to the chairman of the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board urging the removal of the law firm of Victor A. Kovner, recent New York City Corporation Counsel as counsel to the medical schools currently negotiating over 400 million dollars of affiliation contracts with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Barry Liebowitz, president of Doctors Council stated "The conflict of interest here is obvious and if this violation of ethics is not corrected immediately, it will be a clear signal of collusion by the Dinkins administration with the medical school affiliates directly responsible for the scandalous conditions at our municipal hospitals."
A consortium of medical schools is currently negotiating with the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) regarding their affiliation contracts which total over $400 million annually.
This consortium has hired Daniel Kurtz, to represent them and he is actively involved in the negotiations. Kurtz is associated with the law firm of Lankeneau, Kovner and Bickford.
One of the principals in that firm is Victor A. Kovner who has only recently left the position of New York City Corporation Counsel, where, among his other duties, he represented the Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Doctors Council believes that the retention of this firm by parties negotiating directly with the HHC represents as clear a conflict of interest as can exist.
We therefore request that you take immediate action to eliminate this conflict prior to our seeking other means to address this outrageous conflict.
(Signed) Barry Liebowitz, M.D.
