A DOCTOR has been accused of a sex attack on a patient in the hospital where he worked.

Police have charged Dr Samir Asad, 62, after the alleged assault on Tuesday.

A 59-year-old woman has claimed Asad exposed himself, pressed himself against her and fondled her breasts after she saw him for an examination in Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock.

The distressed patient ran from the room and the alarm was raised after she alerted a nurse . Strathclyde Police have interviewed the woman and taken items of her clothing for forensic examination.

Married Asad - who is a chest consultant - was suspended from his post while police investigate.

He was staying in NHS-owned accommodation in the hospital grounds while working on a six-month contract. Hospital bosses told him he could remain living in the property - but he was banned from entering the main building.

However he has left his digs after being accused of the attack in the outpatients' department.

The locum doctor had been supplied to Crosshouse Hospital by Medacs Healthcare - an agency who provide health workers across the world.

Asad lives in London's Putney area with his wife and family but it is understood he is staying at another address in London.

The drama has left workers at the NHS Ayrshire and Arran hospital shocked. A source said: "The woman was hysterical when she came out the examination room.

"She grabbed a member of staff and was shouting what had happened.

"The nurse couldn't believe what she was hearing and it took a few minutes before she found the right person to inform.

"The police were called and hospital protocol kicked in which meant Dr Asad was asked to leave the building.

"The details of the allegation were explained to him but he was told that he was entitled to remain in his accommodation while the matter was investigated."

Asad returned to Scotland on Friday and handed himself into Kilmarnock police station where he was charged with sexual assault.

He was released from custody and gave an undertaking to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on January 6. A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "A 62-year-old man has been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with an alleged sexual assault."

The woman who claims she was attacked lives in Kilmarnock and had been referred to the hospital with a respiratory problem.

A Medacs Healthcare spokesman said last night: "We're aware of the allegation and are co-operating with the hospital and police.

"It would be inappropriate to make further comment."

Asad said: "I can't talk just now I'm in the middle of a British Airways problem."

He said he would phone back but did not.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran refused to comment.
