DNAP PRODUCT SALES DOUBLE OVER PREVIOUS YEAR; CHERRY TOMATO PRODUCT LINE LAUNCHED INTO SAN DIEGO AND PHILADELPHIA MARKETS

CINNAMINSON, N.J., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) reported today that product sales of its two joint ventures with DuPont, FreshWorld in premium fruits and vegetables and InterMountain Canola in healthy edible oils, and its Quantix(TM) diagnostics business more than doubled in the first quarter of 1993, as compared to the same period a year ago. First quarter 1993 product sales of $1,365,000 also represent a 42 percent increase over fourth quarter 1992 product sales of $962,000.
The company also announced today that its FreshWorld joint venture will be introducing its FreshWorld Farms(TM) Cherry Tomato into test markets in San Diego and Philadelphia.
"We are pleased that significant momentum is building in our three core business areas with product sales up 129 percent. We are also pleased that our FreshWorld joint venture has successfully brought to market a new premium product, the FreshWorld Farms Cherry Tomato," said Robert Serenbetz, president and chief executive officer of DNAP. "We look for FreshWorld, which now has several premium product offerings in the supermarket, to enjoy even more rapid rates of revenue growth as it goes forward.
"The FreshWorld Farms Cherry Tomato has better taste, color, firmness and longer shelf-life than commercial cherry tomatoes," said Mr. Serenbetz. "FreshWorld plans to scale-up both production and distribution of the cherry tomato line in early 1994. We believe the product is well-positioned to capture an attractive share of a market currently estimated to be $100 million at wholesale."
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products and environmental diagnostic products for consumer and industrial markets. The company has two major operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld in premium fruits and vegetables, and InterMountain Canola Company in special varieties of edible canola oil.
