DNAP AND DU PONT JOINT VENTURE TO SUPPLY IMPROVED CANOLA OIL
TO VAN DEN BERGH FOODS COMPANY, A SUBSIDIARY OF UNILEVER
CINNAMINSON, N.J., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) announced today that InterMountain Canola Company, its joint venture with Du Pont, has entered into a three-year agreement to supply a specialty canola oil to Van den Bergh Foods Company, a subsidiary of Unilever.
The unique canola oil InterMountain is supplying has high oxidative stability and superior nutritional qualities. Levels of monounsaturated fats in this specialty oil are significantly higher than those of commodity canola oils, and saturated fat levels are the lowest of any vegetable oil. Medical studies have shown that high consumption of saturated fats may lead to an increase in the level of cholesterol in the blood, a condition which has been associated with heart disease. By contrast, diets high in monounsaturated fats have been linked with low serum cholesterol levels in some study populations.
Van den Bergh Foods will process, and then market, this highly- stable ingredient oil for potential use in several food processing market segments, including cold cereals, nutritional snacks, baking mixes, confectionery products, batter and breading mixes, as well as in the dairy foods industry.
Another specialty canola oil from InterMountain is its Clear Valley(TM) brand canola oil, which is a heat stable, low saturated fat cooking oil. Clear Valley is currently being supplied to a Fortune 50 company for use in potato chips it is test marketing.
InterMountain's oils are products of research using cellular biology and conventional breeding techniques, and conform to FDA guidelines. InterMountain received a Plant Variety Protection Certificate for this variety of canola and is developing and field-testing other varieties, including one even lower in saturated fat.
As the largest producer of identity-preserved varieties of canola oil in the United States, InterMountain develops improved seed varieties, contract grows the new canola varieties, contracts for the processing of the harvested canola seed, and then markets the oil to food processors. InterMountain is located in Idaho Falls, Idaho, close to its contract acreage.
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products, agricultural and environmental diagnostics, and ice modification products and processes for industrial and consumer markets. The company has two operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld and InterMountain Canola Company.
