DNAP'S AGRI-DIAGNOSTICS ASSOCIATES PARTNERSHIP COMMENCES FULL
COMMERCIAL LAUNCH OF ITS QUANTIX ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSTATION
CINNAMINSON, N.J., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) announced today that its Agri-Diagnostics Associates (ADA) partnership has commenced the full commercial launch of its Quantix(TM) Environmental Workstation. The workstation is used for the rapid, on-site detection and measurement of gasoline contamination (e.g., benzene, tolulene, ethyl benzene and xylene, or "total BTEX") in soil and groundwater. In field trials, the system demonstrated excellent correlations to standard Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methods.
Testing for BTEX has traditionally been conducted in off-site laboratories, often leading to greater expenses and delays in field operations. The costs attributable to environmental testing in general in the United States has been estimated to be $1.7 billion, a figure which is expected to grow 6 percent per year over the next five years. Market studies estimate that in 1992, 3.6 million tests will be conducted for gasoline contamination.
"Contamination of soil and groundwater by gasoline is a widespread environmental problem," said Steven Ludmerer, chairman and CEO of DNAP Diagnostics, a general partner of Agri-Diagnostics Associates. "The Quantix portable analysis system demonstrated the potential to reduce the costs involved in the remediation and monitoring of spill sites, and other situations in which the extent of soil and groundwater contamination must be quickly and accurately determined by a site manager. The Quantix Workstation offers environmental professionals the only means to measure levels of BTEX contamination without leaving the site."
The Quantix Workstation provides accurate data on up to five samples of soil and/or groundwater within 20-30 minutes. Results are displayed digitally, and can be stored or downloaded to a PC. The cost of the Quantix Workstation starter program, which includes a quantimeter and BTEX test components sufficient for 30 BTEX tests, is $1,800. Additional BTEX test components cost $40 per sample tested.
The Quantix Workstation was developed by Agri-Diagnostics under the guidance of an independent advisory group comprised of environmental professionals from universities, a regulatory agency, engineering and consulting firms, remediation contractors, utilities and petroleum/chemical companies.
In 1991, Agri-Diagnostics launched other products based on immunoassay technology to detect pesticide residues in soil and groundwater, and is currently developing additional Quantix products for the detection of chlorinated solvents and diesel/fuel oil components. In 1987, the company introduced the first immunoassay systems for the detection of fungal diseases in turf grass.
Agri-Diagnostics Associates, a partnership between DNAP and Union Carbide, is the subject of an agreement in principle whereby DNAP will raise its interest to 90 percent from 40 percent and become its sole general partner.
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products, agricultural and environmental diagnostics, and ice modification products and processes for industrial and consumer markets. The company has two operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld in branded produce, and InterMountain Canola Company in canola oil.
