DNA PLANT UNIT ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO TECHNOLOGY FOR DETECTION OF WIDELY-USED PESTICIDES

CINNAMINSON, N.J., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) announced today that its environmental diagnostics unit, Agri-Diagnostics Associates, has acquired exclusive rights from Monsanto Company (NYSE: MTC) to U.S. Patent 5,147,786, which covers immunoassays for the detection of a widely-used class of agricultural chemicals called a-haloacetamides or acetanilides. This class includes the major herbicides alachlor and metolachlor, as well as such herbicides as acetochlor, propachlor, and butachlor.
Agri-Diagnostics' rights include an exclusive license of the technology, the U.S. patent and any counterpart patents granted in other countries. The patent covers immunoassays, chemical preparation methods, test kits, and uses of the immunoassay. Immunoassay is an analytical technique widely used in medical testing that has recently been adapted for environmental, food, and agricultural testing.
"Now, only immunoassay kits made by or licensed from Agri- Diagnostics can use this technology to detect these widely used herbicides in groundwater, soil, and food," said Steven L. Ludmerer, president and CEO of Agri-Diagnostics Associates.
Agri-Diagnostics' Alachlor 2.0 and Metolachlor 2.0 Immunoassay Kits use the proprietary technology covered by this patent to provide rapid, accurate analysis of contamination of soil, groundwater, and food at a fraction of the cost required for traditional laboratory analytical techniques, such as chromatography. The kits have been optimized to detect and differentiate the target chemicals at the levels specified by the U.S. EPA, FDA, and state agencies.
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products and environmental diagnostic products for consumer and industrial markets. The company has two major operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld in premium fruits and vegetables, and InterMountain Canola Company in special varieties of edible canola oil.
