DNA PLANT TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES MARKET EXPANSIONS BY FRESHWORLD JOINT VENTURE

CINNAMINSON, N.J., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- DNA Plant Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: DNAP) today announced that its FreshWorld joint venture with Du Pont has broadened product offerings and expanded geographic distribution of its VegiSnax(R) and VegiSweet(TM) premium vegetables. Robert Serenbetz, DNAP president and chief executive officer, said, "We expect that these significant distribution and marketing advances at FreshWorld will lead to accelerated revenue growth in 1993."
Specifically, the company announced the following:
-- FreshWorld has launched VegiSweet carrots in one-pound bags in supermarkets in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Utah and Pennsylvania. In addition, VegiSnax carrots are now being sold through supermarkets in Salt Lake City and Philadelphia.
-- The first sweet mini-peppers harvested by FreshWorld's partner Meyer Tomatoes have been shipped to stores in the Pacific Northwest. Based on strong demand, Meyer has increased its acreage in Mexico for further expansion this spring.
-- The offering of VegiSnax carrot sticks in 1.5 ounce servings as a menu choice in McDonald's "Build Your Own Happy Meal" program has been expanded from a successful test in Salt Lake City McDonald's to restaurants in the Detroit area.
-- Amtrak is selling VegiSnax carrots in club cars and snack bars nationwide, following testing of the product on its Metroliner out of Boston. FreshWorld is supplying VegiSnax carrots to Amtrak distribution centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Boston.
-- Continental Airlines has begun serving VegiSnax carrot sticks in its in-flight snack meals on all domestic routes, following a test of the product on flights out of Houston last year.
"Consumer demand for larger packages of our great-tasting carrots motivated our offering of this product in bulk branded form. Product sales are off to a very strong start, and we're encouraged further by the fact that we're selling every carrot we harvest," said Mr. Serenbetz.
"Moreover, expanded foodservice distribution of VegiSnax vegetables will give our products exceptional visibility," said Mr. Serenbetz. " Sampling in the sky' is how many popular snack foods have gotten their start. We hope that once these new consumers on Continental and Amtrak -- as well as existing consumers on United Airlines and Horizon Air -- taste VegiSnax carrots, they will seek them out at the end of their journeys in their local supermarkets and convenience stores."
VegiSnax and VegiSweet vegetables offer a distinctly superior, sweeter taste and longer shelf-life than any other commercially available produce. VegiSnax and VegiSweet carrots and sweet mini-peppers are specially handled and packaged to ensure that the good-tasting, low-calorie, nutritious vegetables remain fresh. These patented vegetable varieties have been developed using techniques that are not subject to special regulatory scrutiny.
DNAP is a leading agricultural biotechnology company, applying a spectrum of technologies to develop and commercialize plant-based products and environmental diagnostic products for consumer and industrial markets. The company has two major operating joint ventures -- FreshWorld in premium fruits and vegetables, and InterMountain Canola Company in special varieties of edible canola oil.
