DMX 800 NUMBER, EXPANDED REMOTE CONTROL CAPABILITY PROVIDE ADDED VALUE TO CABLE OPERATORS

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The move toward interactivity in cable systems took another step forward today when Digital Music Express (DMX), the premium digital music service, announced that it will expand the capabilities of its remote control, the DMX-DJ(R), making it a vehicle for communicating with subscribers and receiving their feedback via an 800 number.
DMX provides continuous, Sony-Philips CD-standard audio programming 24 hours a day without commercial or disc jockey interruption, offering 30 different channels of music programming and video channel simulcasting. The DMX-DJ contains a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen that instantaneously provides programming information -- song title, artist, album title and composer -- of the selection being played.
The 800 number, 800-362-TUNE (800-362-8863) goes on-line at 8:30 a.m. (PST) on Nov. 15. It will be in service everyday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (PST). The number will be communicated to current DMX subscribers via the DMX-DJ.
The introduction of the 800 number will dramatically increase the benefits to subscribers now offered by the DMX-DJ. Besides programming information, the screen will display announcements of promotions and giveaways, along with trivia questions that can be answered via the 800 line. Winners will receive free CDs and other prizes.
The promotions and contests will be designed to keep subscribers tuned into DMX. Contests in which consumers win prizes by calling the 800 number to answer trivia questions or respond to lucky birthday drawings will raise awareness of DMX while making it more attractive to new subscribers.
The 800 line will also provide subscribers with a means to communicate directly with DMX, voicing comments, suggestions and requests, while also taking part in promotions and even ordering a new subscription to the service.
"This two-way communications tool provides a number of benefits to both cable operators and subscribers," said Pam Bertino, director of operations in DMX's programming and research department. "Subscribers can interact with the music service and have their voices heard, while cable operators benefit from the added value the 800 number provides."
And, perhaps most importantly, this will serve as a valuable retention tool," Bertino said. "The first four months after subscribing are when consumers evaluate the service, and this toll-free number lets them voice their suggestions and concerns to ICT/DMX during that time."
Accepting customer requests is an innovative addition for a digital music service. Requests will be passed on to DMX's programming department and considered during bi-weekly programming meetings.
