DLJ'S SPROUT GROUP RAISES $225 MILLION

NEW YORK, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sprout Group, the venture capital affiliate of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ), has completed the formation of Sprout Growth II, L.P., a $204 million late-stage private equity fund, the group announced today. The fund provides capital for rapidly growing companies in the health care, information technology, retailing and services areas. Coupled with $21 million of side-by-side funding by Sprout and DLJ employees, Sprout has raised $225 million in new funding in the last six months. Sprout's prior fund, which is still actively investing, is the $131 million Sprout VI, L.P., multi-stage venture fund. The Sprout Group's total capital base now exceeds $700 million.
More than 70 percent of Sprout Growth II's capital was provided by existing investors including AIG, Bigler Crossroads, Brinson Partners, DLJ, Endowment Venture Partners II, the Equitable, St. Paul Companies, State of Wisconsin and Unilever Pension (U.K.), said Richard E. Kroon, managing partner.
"We are very grateful for the support we are receiving from our investors, many of whom have been our partners in several funds. In addition, we are delighted to welcome ARCO Pension, The Church Fund, University of Michigan and University of Notre Dame as new limited partners to our program," said Mr. Kroon.
The Sprout Group has offices in New York, Menlo Park and Boston. In addition to Mr. Kroon, its general partners are Robert Curry, Robert Finzi, Keith Geeslin, Janet Hickey, Murray Metcalfe, Larry Reeder and Jon Stone. Mr. Curry and Mr. Finzi joined Sprout in 1991, when Sprout assumed management responsibility for two funds totaling $190 million formed earlier by Merrill Lynch, which exited the venture industry.
